Culture of Fear
Background: Somewhat related to the Fear exhibit found under Violence, this exhibit focuses on a general “Culture of Fear” that is present in the world around us and is illustrated in some forms of advertising. The Ad: This collection will be expanded. The initial set of ads includes a few examples of how fear is manifest in our worlds of advertising. Discussion Questions: (1) What role does fear play in our culture and how is this reflected in advertising? (2) What does fear and advertising suggest about our consciousness as it connects to popular culture? (3) How is fear used as a motivation to sell products?
