Background: The worlds of autos and advertising have many numerous connections. This exhibit features auto ads and asks you to consider the ways in which the worlds of autos and advertising intersect. The Ads: Note that a number of the ads feature sexual or gendered dynamics. Especially relevant are themes of females who are unable to drive and females being used as ornamentation to sell cars. Discussion Questions: (1) What cultural foundations exist that help explain the notion that women are inferior to men when it comes to driving? (2) Why are males typically associated with automobiles and associated metaphors (like driving, control of the road, aggressiveness, etc)? (3) Why are females commonly depicted as a sexual counterpart to the automobile?
