Background: Androgyny is a very curious arena of popular culture. One of the compelling things about androgyny is that it seems to disrupt the traditional gender, sex, and sexual binaries—male/female, straight/gay, masculine/feminine. In this sense, we might think of androgyny in advertising as a progressive feature direction. The Ads: This exhibit is relatively new and I hope to ad more ads to the selections. Discussion Questions: (1) To what extent is androgyny a part of advertising or popular culture? (2) Is it more or less likely that we will see more androgyny in popular forms of advertising? Why? (3) Do you agree that androgyny within advertising represents a more progressive direction?
